I read Fish Don’t Exist by Lulu Miller for my book club –— after those jerks rejected the non-fiction one I wanted to read about eels! But whatever, bygones. I loved it. Miller’s focus is famed biologist David Star Jordan, a figure revered at my alma mater, known for discovering a large quantity of fish species, and whose Darwinism later took a much darker turn into eugenics. The writing is spectacular. It was so creative how Miller wove her own questions –— both about science and our place in the world –— into the story of this biologist.
